Kirandich Dam

Dams in Baringo County

Kirandich Dam: The Forgotten Dam

Part of the reason Kirandich Dam does remains untravelled is because its completion was 30 years in the making, having stalled for the better part of 29 years. In 2017, the Government revived the project to a tune of 300 million. Its reservoir, with a catchment of 30 km2, is soused by the surface inflow of four streams that conflux at Kipkolel Forest; Kinyo, Kaplel, Kong’met and Terambus.

Today, Kirandich Dam supplies clean water to about 65,000 residents of Baringo North.  The dam sits beautifully in a gaping valley within Kipkokel Forest, part of which was done away with for its construction. The turquoise water, contrasting beautifully with the surrounding wooded canyon, forever transposed this area. It is stunning in terms of its scenic beauty and the landscape, both from a viewpoint and close-up. Kirandich Dam also offer unique insights into water management.

The approach to the dam is avowedly strenuous but, it can be sighted from the Kirandich Treatment Site. It does not have exhibits, interactive displays, and educational materials that help visitors understand the purpose and significance of the dam. It is located just 7 km from Kabarnet town, past Kabarnet Post Office.

Kenya has several reservoir dams that play a consequential roles in water supply, hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, flood control, and other water-related activities. The most famous of these are Seven Forks Dams along the Tana River. While reservoir dams are critical infrastructure projects that contribute to Kenya’s economic development, they are also visually stunning go-to destinations.
