Found along Obama Road off Airport Road 4 km north of Makupa, this is a must-see on a tour of Mombasa or en-route Mombasa International Airport. When was the last time you saw a rough chunk of wood and imagined it as an elegant tribal face, a rococo ornamental animal, or an entire Maasai warrior? Welcome to the heart of woodcarvers in Kenya! The selection of merchandise at the store features upwards of 2,000 unique items, all reasonably priced. Nothing seems too much trouble for them to custom create or re-imagine. If you are interested in one of their larger pieces of furniture, the society will arrange shipping for you. On site, marvel at the fabulous creations and workmanship of the Akamba, who are head and shoulders the master woodcarvers of Kenya. It is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday and closes at 4 pm and 2 pm on Sartuday and Sunday.
