The Africa Hotel: Kenya’s Oldest Hotel?
Opened in 1901 and operated by Goans, Diaz and Junior who ran a grocery and tailoring enterprise that doubled as a Portuguese Counsel, it was later transformed to a hotel. At the onset it had lovely sea views from the balcony. Since then, well over a century ago, up until now, it has been continually serving authentic Swahili cuisine. It is promoted as the oldest operational eatery in Kenya, ergo its history has been assiduously followed and all along its walls are mounted photographic records of different periods in the history of Mombasa City. The Swahili cuisine, its laid back ambiance, and the infectious Swahili mannerism, are no less impressive.
Deep inside Old Town, Africa Hotel is situated midway between Fort Jesus and the Old Port along Mbarak Hinawy Road. An additional guidance is warranted here about the scale of Old Town: That although the common circuit loops around the triangle area enclosed by two main roads alluded to, there is much more to see at Old Town – deeper into the residential area.
