Mbasa Islands: A Birding Haven
Minimally utilized and free from human disturbance, the twin Mbasa Island is a safe haven where birds have found a suitable habitat to thrive. Mbasa Island is popular as a birding sanctuary, where over 100 bird species have been recorded. Over many years of isolated domination, it has provided essential habitat for nesting and breeding birds, with suitable conditions in the rocky cliffs, beaches, and dense vegetation for birds to build nests, lay eggs, and raise their young.
The absence of predators and human disturbance on Mbasa island makes it ideal breeding grounds for many bird species. Common species found on bird islands may include long-tailed cormorants, fish eagles, marsh harriers and little white egrets, among others. Bird gatherings are thickest at sunset, when birds return to roost. Signally, many bird species congregate in large colonies on the islands during the breeding season, forming dense populations of nesting birds.
These colonies can range in size from a few dozen to hundred or even thousands, depending on the species and the season. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts visit Mbasa islands to observe nesting seabirds, witness spectacular bird colonies, and learn about avian ecology and behavior. Docking is not allowed, or provided for, so visitors only lakeward observation with a go-around the islands on boats.

The resident birds depend mainly on the fishing villages for food, gainfully from the worthless parts discarded by the fishermen. Mbasa island is of significant conservation importance for protecting and preserving the varied bird species, particularly species that are threatened, endangered, or vulnerable to extinction.
