Red Cliff Camp: A Sea Facing Hideout

It takes the form of Red Cliffs Camp and comprises a central banda, consisting of a lounge, a bar, a dining room, a kitchen and stores, and two double-bandas, each complete with a bathroom, overlooking the ocean

Red Hill Camp is by no means a boutique lodge, but it provides the traveller yearning for a private, off-the-grid hidey-hole with exceptional views and the next best thing to heaven – with sounds of crashing waves, uninterrupted ocean views, fairy-tale safari plains, endless meadows and, of course, Kenya’s longest river, the Tana. Red Cliff Camp is approachable from Kipini; distance from Malindi 172 km, or 75 km from Garsen.

This undiscovered African bush land, unpraised for the most part, has lots to offer, both in amazing scenery and variety of ecologies. From its unique beautifully-appointed perch atop a coastal bluff, Red Cliff Camp has a resplendent view over Ungwana Bay. Remarkably, Ungwana Bay has one of Kenya’s longest continuous stretches of beach, which has to be seen to be believed, but because it is at the mouth of River Tana the water often lack clarity, during high tide, due to silting.

The red cliffs, from which the camp gets its name, are part of an intricate ecological and drainage system, sloping down in some areas to give way to a virgin beach. Land wise, the area is typically dry for most times of the year, October to April. The River Tana itself, which is several metres wide in many places, on its final downswing to debouch into the Indian Ocean, has a vast triangular tract of sediments where palms and old groves harbouring prolific fauna remind the traveller that it is one of, if not, Kenya’s greatest ecosystem.

Then come the rains, and its banks are quick to react, and within a few weeks of the rains its banks are full and overflowing, and the mighty rush of muddy water at is empties into the Indian Ocean is a spectacular sight. The wealth of wildlife is another reason to visit the Red Cliffs Camp. To note: During the rains (March to May and November- December) the roads are unnavigable for saloon vehicles.
