Sondu Miriu Hydro Power Plant: Roadside Views
Raised prominently between Nyakach Escarpment and Koguta Forest Reserve, along the border of Homa Bay and Kisumu County 8 km from Pap-Onditi enroute Kendu Bay via C19 Road, the mega structures and layout of Sondu Miriu Hydro-Power Station are collectively an impressive enginery. Unfolding from the top of Koguta Hill, down along the hillside to the valley base, it is a sanguine view about the prospect of human-machine symbiosis. Seemingly out of place, in contrast to the undisturbed hillscape and sparsely settled bucolic surroundings, everything about this set-up, surprisingly pleasant, appears a century progressively ahead.
The choice of sites was far from random. This is a sparsely populated area, which made it easier to secure the land and keep evictions to a minimum. It was close, but not too close, to an established transport hub. Commissioned in 2009 with an installed capacity of 60 MW, it diverts water from the Miriu River to a reservoir atop Koguta Hill, before this is directed along a 6 km headrace tunnel seen along the side of hill, through a power house at the base of the Nyakach Escarpment. Back above ground, the intake structure, a small impoundment built behind an 18 metres tall weir, regulates the pressure inside the tunnel. After passing through the powerhouse the water is reinstated to Miriu River along a concrete 4.5 km long culvert-channel running westwards along the foot of the Nyakach Escarpment.
Everything considered, the Sondu Miriu Power Plant consists of a dam, penstock, powerhouses, and turbines. Water released from the dam is channeled through the penstock to drive turbines, which, in turn, generate electricity. The generated power is then transmitted to the national grid. In 2004 work began on Phase II to make larger the power generation capacity at Soundu by 60 MW. The project is operated by Sondu-Miriu Power Company, a private firm involved in growth and operation of power generation projects in Kenya. Always a pleasant view, Sondu Miriu Hydro Power Plant, when considered as part of something bigger, stands as an example of Kenya’s commitment to diversifying its energy sources, promoting sustainability, and meeting rising energy demands of its populace and economy.
