Rusinga Island Festival: Cultural Extravaganza

Rusinga island festival is an annual celebration of the vibrant cultures, and of many customs in western Kenya, particularly of the Abasuba tribe who inhabit Rusinga Island where this festival is held. Traditionally held in December, it is an exuberant two days of music, fashion, film, food, artistry, literature, sports and conversations that take you back in time, into the wealth of the Abasuba culture.

As a result of assimilation and intermarriage with the Luo, the Suba culture has come under pressure and the language is now listed in UNESCO’s Red Book of Endangered Languages (2003). Rusinga and Mfangano Islands are in the tentative list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. In December 2019, Rusinga Island Festival commemorated its 8th Edition, as one of the most popular festivals in Kenya.

There are a variety of festivals throughout the year in Kenya, celebrating the diverse cultures, traditions, music, art, and wildlife. These annual festivals offer opportunities for cultural exchange, entertainment and exploration, allowing visitors to experience the vibrant and dynamic spirited cultures of Kenya.
