Mbita Point: The Jumping-Off to Rusinga
From the turnoff, the C19 Homa Bay-Mbita Road travels northeast until it reaches Mbita Point, 32 km away. There’s a lot to interest the visitor here. An outmoded town, it is a popular jumping-off place for trips aiming for any of the three island getaways. And from Mbita Point, there’s a long, scenic route branching off that takes travellers into Ruma National Park, up, over and through the Gwassi Hills.
One of the best way to spend a day at Mbita Point is a visit to Lake Victoria Safari Village. Chiefly a fishing village, it is customary for visitors here to take walking trips to the fishing ports, to espy local anglers bringing in their huge catch in, and the spirited fishmongers haggling over prices. During the cooler hours of the day, Gembe Hills are a great walking and hiking trail, to get a bird-eye view of the area.
For the overnight guests, Lake Victoria Safari Village has attractive rondavels, each with its own bathroom and a private veranda overlooking the Lake Victoria. Other highlights include: the tropical gardens, beach front, lighthouse and boating tours. Reduced packages are offered to those visiting Lake Victoria Safari Village and Takawiri Island Resort on consecutive terms. A motorable bridge connects Mbita to Rusinga Island. At the pier, Mbita Ferry connects it to more than ten islands.
