Suuq Mugdi Market: A Cultural Experience
Garissa town has two predominant markets, the Suuq Mugdi and the Municipal Stage Market, although micro enterprises are generally spread over all streets in the township. Every morning, like clockwork, vendors set up temporary stalls to sell a wide variety of goods, including fresh produce, local products, handicrafts, clothing, souvenirs, and street food. Suuq Mugdi, unofficially known as the ‘dark market’, a moniker referencing its covered isles, offers a better experience, and is often the target for many visitors to Garissa. The long-lived Suuq Mugdi market has been for many years to Garissa town what Lamu market is for Lamu Island.
Suuq Mugdi is the stripped-down version of the community, reflecting the local culture, cuisine, and economy. A visit to the market is a moment to pause the general anxiety carried on a trip to Garissa, and have a rare opportunity to enjoy the hitcher and thither of the busy market which, much to the surprise of many, is patronized by a very friendly coterie. The frequent burning down of the Suuq Mugdi has been the subject of much public scrutiny.
It can’t be accidental, many argue! “It’s the criminal work of a cartel culture that seeks to grab valuable real estate on which hundreds of ordinary families depend for their livelihoods”. But, if history can judge the people of Garissa is that they are resilient, the only way they know to survive, and the market will rise again from the ashes. Often vibrant and a bustling hubs, attracting locals and tourists alike with its lively ambience and colorful displays, Suuq Mugdi serves many interests.
