Kocholia Dam and Kocholia Irrigation Scheme
It is not at all rare to find trucks lining the entire 10 km stretch from Kocholia to Malaba border point, waiting to clear for onward transfer to Uganda and outwith. It’s an old vexing problem, yet, thanks to the One Stop Border Post (OSBP) the waiting time, which until recently could be days, has been reduced to few hours.
Malaba and Busia Busia are two of the busiest border posts in Kenya. While Busia is the main entry point for fuel to Uganda with more than 300 trucks entering daily, Malaba is seeing a high volume of cargo trucks to and from Uganda. Both posts also service high levels of passenger traffic as well as for informal trade.
Which is why Kocholia Dam and irrigation scheme may one day be an interest for motorists at Kocholia. Its proximity to the A109 Mombasa-Malaba international trunk road as well as to Malaba border makes it of convenience to the locals and the ever growing number of people visiting the region. In 2017, the government launched the construction of the mega Kocholia dam and irrigation scheme.
Located in scenic area below the Kocholia Hills, the multi-purpose project will support irrigation, supply water for domestic use and it will have a hydropower station. Launched along River Malakisi, the project consists of a 43m high dam, 4,000 hectares of land under irrigation and a hydropower component of 1091 KW. The Kocholia Irrigation Scheme also aims to be a reliable source of clean of water to upwards of 10,000 people living in Kocholia and surrounding environs.
The Malaba-Kocholia and Angurai water lines that serves the vast Teso North population are undergoing restoration towards this momentous project. The upgrade project that’s fully funded and implemented by the County Government of Busia has also seen the rehabilitation of the treatment point to full capacity.
